Rooms that need tactile signs
2010 ADA Standards §216.2 requires tactile signs at doors that lead to permanent rooms and spaces. The designation is the room’s name, number, or both. If the room will still be called that in a year, it is permanent.
Restrooms, bathing rooms, and locker rooms are called out on their own. Exit doors, stairways, and floor identification at stairs have their own rules in §216.4. Means of egress signs that are visual only do not replace the tactile identification at the door of a permanent room.
Occupant names, such as the person who sits in an office this semester, are not the permanent designation. The room number is. Put the number in raised characters and Grade 2 braille. Put the occupant name in a changeable window if the design needs it.
Exterior doors to permanent rooms follow the same identification rule. The molded acrylic face is interior and exterior rated. Photoluminescent faces are a separate question. Ask before writing a glow finish onto an exterior door.
List every permanent door on the sign schedule before you request a quote. The dimensional limits are on the ADA reference.
